About Mandalay Restaurant

Mandalay Burmese Restaurant in San Francisco Since 1984. James Beard Foundation Award Winner 2024. Burmese food is not yet ubiquitous like the cuisines of its neighbors China, India and Thailand, and this lends it a mystique that most Asian restaurants just can’t maintain in San Francisco. Hip city dwellers want exotic, they want unique, they want special, and Burmese seems like the kind of food that the neighbors might not have discovered yet. But as much as the majority of SF foodies seem to delight in trying something β€œdifferent” they still tend to popularize the blandest, most americanized establishments like, well…you know.

It's one my friends favorite restaurant so we had to try it out. Mandalay Restaurant made it to the Michelin guide in 2015 and 2016. Beautifully decorated space, there was a diamond crested Buddha. The service was amazing. The ladies were super sweet and courteous. We tried a bunch of things: leaf salad, Singapore noodles, hot and sour soup, lamb and potatoes stew, flatbread and side of coconut rice. Most everything tasted great but it was lacking spice. The flatbread, soup and Singapore noodles were my fave. I wasn't a fan of the lamb dish. Overall, great place to checkout

Excellent amazing worth the hype. The food was great service was fast and I will definitely be back and highly recommend. We got the tea leaf salsa and baranda and a curry beef and all was great. I wanna try the mango spicy chicken when I come back!

**Mandalay Restaurant** is a long-standing SF staple for Burmese cuisine, but it’s a polarizing experience that may not suit those seeking a light or fresh meal. While often cited as a local favorite, the kitchen’s heavy-handed use of oil can easily overwhelm the palate, leading to dishes that feel more greasy than flavorful. Even the signature salads miss the mark for health-conscious diners, as the heavy frying and excessive oil content strip away the freshness one typically expects from the dish. If you prefer bright, vibrant spices over deep-fried textures and oil-soaked bases, this iconic spot might unfortunately fall short of the hype.

Really delicious experience. Food comes out quickly and very tasty. I love that they mix the noodle dishes and tea leaf salad for you table side. Everything is so fresh and herby. Perfect little spot in the Richmond and it is very clear why they’ve been around for over 40 years. Highlights were the Burmese pancake with the curry, the Burmese flat noodles - very coconut forward, mango pork, and the tea leaf salad. Their Mandalay cooler with beer, mint, and ginger is so refreshing especially on a warm day. Can’t wait to go back again.

Mandalay SF in the Richmond neighborhood is clearly a high demand spot and for good reason. Even with a reservation made a few days in advance, there was a short wait, but it was absolutely worth it. The overall experience stood out, especially the warm and genuine hospitality from the staff, which immediately made us feel welcome. We started with the tea leaf salad and platha with dip. The server kindly suggested the freshly made platha, and it turned out to be a great call. Both dishes were fresh, flavorful, and a perfect introduction to Burmese cuisine. For mains, we ordered the chicken satay, basil spicy chicken, asparagus spicy chicken, and chicken noodle soup. Every dish had bold flavors and a distinct Burmese character that set it apart from other Asian cuisines. While some dishes leaned a bit on the oilier side for my personal taste, the flavors were still excellent and memorable. The cozy, intimate atmosphere paired with attentive service made the meal feel special. I would definitely come back again and strongly recommend making a reservation in advance, especially on weekends.
